Upfront, I'm not a programmer and haven't really tinkered with code except for BB code. I thought I'd take a look at "Why Linux" and found this article. After reading all of the pluses for using Linux, I'm kind of wondering why I'm using Windows at all with the benefits of open source, so much customization and tweaks you can do.

Windows, as we know it, becomes sluggish day after day. You will want to re-install Windows after a while when you encounter crashes or slowdowns on your system.
If you are using Linux, you will not have to worry about re-installing it just to experience a faster and a smoother system. Linux helps your system run smooth for a longer period (in fact, much longer!).
Thanks for this group @Geffers, nice to explore something new.

Ok I am a bit confused here, but are we talking about hosting or your actual computer?

I think Linux has multiple use applications, both for personal use, programmer and development use? I'm just learning about it, but that's my impression?

Well my hosting is Linux although I know you can have Windows hosting too but never used that.

Oh that's right. I can recall now many years ago, when I had my own web server, the developer wanted to change my Windows OS server to Linux OS, which he did. It seems Linux is the preferred OS in the developer world?

Well as a basic programmer myself I thought that Linux was just for servers/hosting but I may be wrong!

Familiarity makes changing awkward, that old saying 'better the devil you know than the devil you don't' makes people reluctant to change but one can try Linux without dumping windows. I'm pretty sure Windows HAS to run from the C drive but Linux can boot from a spare wheel on you car, well nearly.
It can be installed on an external USB memory stick or installed along side your current Windows then at boot you get an option which one to boot in to. If you use USB3 it will run quite happily from an external drive.
I've been using Linux for probably 12+ years now, personally do not use Windows at all now.
It is a great desktop with much eye candy on offer to make usage a wee bit more entertaining, I am currently away from home but in the new year I shall produce a video showing my desktop and some of the effects.

You know so much more about programming than me! What would be the area that most intrigues you, programming or coding? Well, as I just asked that I realized that I might have not used the terms correctly, so I went to the internet for an explanation I much needed to understand.
https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/difference-between-coding-and-programming/
We can define coding as the act of translating instructions for a computer from human language to a language a machine can understand. This code tells the computer how to behave and what actions to perform.
Programming is the process of creating the instructions that will tell the computer how to perform a particular task given to it. You do this using programming languages'

Great directions. I'd like to try this on my Mac laptop. My other laptop and desktop are windows OS and they are just fine, however, my Mac could use some help. I've not been a fan of their OS, but it would be fun if I could "Linux" my Mac. Whatcha' think? Looking forward to seeing your desktop in the New Year!
Thank you both for good conversation and helpful tips!
