Gas Prices, UK v US

    Most people are aware Europe has higher gas prices than US but for comparison I'll use current UK prices.

    In UK all our petrol (gas) pumps dispense in litres (strangely most drivers still refer to MPG), there are 4.55 litres to a UK gallon. Current average cost is £1.55 per litre, that equates to £7.05 for a UK gallon.

    Currently the exchange rate is around $1.25 to UK pound so our £7.05 per gallon converts to $8.82 for a UK gallon.

    The US gallon is a wee bit smaller than ours, not sure why, US gallon is apparently 128 fluid ounces and UK gallon is 160 fluid ounces so using that conversion to reduce the UK cost of $8.82 the comparative cost becomes $7.05.

    I understand in California the US gas prices have exceeded $7.05. Appreciate some (most/all) States are cheaper than California but the gap has closed.

    California usually maintains a higher cost on gas than most states, perhaps New York would be as close? States that produce oil and gas, like Texas, and Louisiana in the south, usually stay $2 to $3 less than California and share their savings throughout most southern states. Right now, gas in Texas is at at $2.75 per gallon. Your cost for gas is really high. Is that the norm, or has that been since covid and then the Ukrain-Russian war put it over?

    Typical politicians want to blame it on outside influences but more than 50% of it is UK tax. Most of our energy price increases are due to the push for green fuel which has to be subsidised to make it appear affordable.

    Before COVID and the Ukraine war it was around £1.20, went up to around £1.70 but dropping back a wee bit.

    Like you mentioned in one post I too have nothing against a sensible progress towards cleaner fuel but technology is not there yet and politicians are just keeping their fingers crossed something gets invented.

    We're on the same page. I'm very frustrated with the economic outlook for America and Europe. You elect a politician to represent you a certain way, and then they get corrupted.

    Yes, fine with progress and finding alternatives in fuel, but you can't dedicate all of your energy on electricity and EV's. The power companies here are having trouble keeping the lights on for us as it is.

    Covid did change everything.
