Hindenburg - not the first airship disaster

Most know of the awful Hindenburg disaster as it was captured on movie film back in 1937 but few know that seven years prior the UK had a similar disaster, this however occurred in the dead of night over fields in France, witnessed only by locals there is no movie or photographic record of the actual disaster, merely the aftermath.

A twelve minute video on the British R101 airship.

The Hindenburg explosion was such a tragedy. I didn't realize there was another one years earlier in France. I love history, and this is an important detail in the history of aviation that is clearly missed as you've noted. I have your video to view today. When I was growing up in Texas, we often saw the Goodyear Blimp flying around town. It was always amazing to see.

Me too, one used to fly over my back garden regularly about 30+ years back, think that was Goodyear too, not sure if same craft as yours, maybe. Geffers

That's really cool. I didn't realize Goodyear was so international and flying their blimp in the UK at one time soooo long ago.

The one that used to flyover us, looked like this below pic.

They are great for police monitoring large crowds at things like sporting events, so much better than a helicopter.

Our soccer Cup Final used to have one above the crowds.

I can see how a blimp would work better in large clouds rather then a helicopter. Blimps are pretty quiet and move slowly. Helicopters would have to circle a lot.
