Social Media Company Liability to Be Determined by Supreme Court

On Monday, the US Supreme Court agreed to hear a case this term on social media company liability over user posts. Gonzales v. Google will determine whether social media companies can be held liable for content published on their platforms. Section 230 of 1996’s Communications Decency Act gives the companies immunity from posts made by others. What’s at issue, in this case, is when the companies use algorithms to promote posts generated by others. Are they still immune from liability for the post?

I pay attention to any law suit cases related to social media.  This case will be worth keeping up with.

How the Supreme Court (US) could change free speech on the internet.

“Without Section 230, some websites would be forced to overblock, filtering content that could create any potential legal risk, and might shut down some services altogether,” General Counsel Halimah DeLaine Prado wrote in a blog post summarizing Google’s position. That would leave consumers with less choice to engage on the internet and less opportunity to work, play, learn, shop, create, and participate in the exchange of ideas online.”

This is exactly the point I've been trying to convey to my senator and others that are paying attention to what the US wants to do to this law.
