Many Twitter users added a Mastodon profile link into their bios as the Twitter alternative picked up steam. Now, any links to blocked Mastodon servers are disabled and accompanied by the text "Warning: this link may be unsafe.
Earlier this week, cybersecurity researchers put the Twitter alternative Mastodon under the microscope and found that the decentralized social media platform had numerous vulnerabilities and other security issues. Mastodon has seen a surge in users since tech entrepreneur Elon Musk took control of Twitter, as many have taken issue with Musk's policies as well as his reinstatement of controversial figures including former President Donald Trump.
Researchers have already discovered an HTML injection vulnerability that could be used to steal users' credentials, while another exploit was found that could allow a hacker to download all the files on a server including shared photos sent via direct messages.

According to Coffey, the influx of Twitter users from the platform around November 5 presented a great opportunity for Mastodon. Concurrently, there was a sudden spike in the number of users of Mastodon, with upticks coinciding with controversial decisions taken and statements made by Twitter chief Elon Musk.
Coffey told The Guardian that Mastodon may have proven to be too complicated for many users who might have struggled to “port” the community that they were interacting with on Twitter before they left it. Many of these users may have gone back to Twitter, while many others may have even left social media entirely.
Mastodon first experienced a “flood of child porn” being posted in theircommunities in 2017, and by 2022, the two largest child pornography communities were second and third on the leaderboards, Post Millennial reports.
“Because there is no central Mastodon authority nobody can stop the pedophiles from using Mastodon, and because there are so many pedophiles on Mastodon, the developers decided that it was best to just go ahead and hide them. They had to hide them if they wanted their platform to grow,” Secjuice wrote.
